The Hague Hopje is named after its inventor: Baron Hop. This baron loved coffee every day and visited one of the many coffee shops in The Hague for a tasty bowl. On a wintry evening, he took a cup of mocha. He did it because of gout and the flu, with extra sugar. When he fell asleep without drinking the coffee. The next morning the rest of the coffee was turned into a sticky mass that tasted delicious. He hastened to the suikerbakker towards his house and asked if he could not sweet candies of it. It worked. And there it is: the hopje was born.
